VENUE...

Being ready to start is an awesome feeling.  You want to get into the grind and start to sculpt your body like an artist would mold a glob of clay.  So you start looking through the phone book for gyms in your area.  You try to remember the gyms that your co-workers or friends have mentioned.  You start wondering what you can afford.  You are definitely aware of the whole gym scam, that you are tied into a life long membership before you know what hit you...

STOP

Don't do another thing!

This is Commandment 3 Venue

The last thing you want to do at this stage is signup at a gym!!!!  Never, Never, Never, would you signup for a gym at this stage.  You ask why?  There are several reasons why.  The first and most important reason is "You are not ready!"  Sure anyone can walk into a gym an slap down your hard earned money, and sure you become a member.  Then what?  The typical scenario:  You goto the gym, you have no idea what to do.  The atmosphere is overwelming, a ton of equipment that you have no idea what to use.  Or what to do with each machine or weight.  So you walk around aimless and try to pickup pointers from the other members.  Bad idea.  Who is to say they have any idea of what to do?  So do you want to follow someone that is as lost as you?  So you try to mimic the moves of another member, you maybe doing the exercise right, but are you being effective?  On the otherhand you could be doing it completely wrong and take the chance of injuring yourself.  OK, let's say you don't injure yourself and you do a few sets of this a few sets of that, and even a few more sets of something else.  Wow, you are working out!  Amazing, you have become a gym goer, weight lifter, an excercise enthusiast.  So you continue to go and do these excercises, you feel good you are going, this is awesome.  Sure it is awesome, but, soon you will look at yourself in the mirror and say "have I done anything?"  This is when most people quit going to the gym.  The majority of people that signup for a gym NEVER st foot in it.  They think by belonging they will become fit.  Then there are those that go an do exactly what you are doing, aimlessly working out, that quit as soon as they say "It is making no difference"!  So what do you do?

If you are ready to take the commitment, if you feel you are ready to take the plunge, then what you need to do is prove it to yourself.  Prove it to yourself??  What do I mean?  You need to show yourself that you can commit and see results withour spending the money belonging to the gym.  You can do excercises at home that will definitely show you progress while at the same time getting you mentally ready for all that the gym has to offer. This was definitely the secret to my success.  I workedout at home for a whole year before I set foot in the gym.  I had completely exhausted ever excercise that I could do at home before even seeking a gym.  Then I was not only ready to see the new equipment the gym had to offer, but moreover I was mentally ready to grasp what was offered by the gym.

The gym is more than a bunch of machines and weights, there is a philosphy and a know how to the entire exercise realm.  No it is not as easy as simply walking into a gym and starting.  There are also a many people that hire a personal trainer to get them started, this can be good or bad.  There are many personal trainers out there, but are they what you need?  Many personal trainers work from a Cookie Cutter alghorithm.  The have the same base set of exercises that they use to start evey student.  I am sorry but everyone needs different sets of exercises to meet their individual needs. Sure there are some very good personal trainers out there that design the complete workout package to exactly your needs.  Good luck at at finding one of those.  So what do you do?  You need to listen the the person that can best tell you what you need.  You!

Ok so you are ready to start, you know that the gym is not for you yet, so what do you do?  First you must finish reading all of the Ten Commandments and then we can start.
